Overview

Locum Caregiver helps caregivers to work at a nursing home temporary. The goal is to help caregivers to earn extra income and gain work experience. Nursing homes that faces staff shortage can benefit from this app to fill-in temporary caregivers and save the cost of recruiting full-time staff. Volunteers from community or students can volunteer to make a positive impact to the lives of older adults in the nursing home.

I searched a few existing apps that serves the function of connecting families with caregivers. The current existing apps included: ClearCareGo Caregiver, Care, and CareLinx.

I also interviewed one full-time caregiver staff that works at a senior home center. Her role was to coordinate activities every week and organize events during special holidays. She has to do the administrative work, ordering food, and setting up decorations. Through the interview, I discovered her struggles coordinating activities with a small amount of helpers.

After online research and interview, I came up with my problem statement and unique functions listed below:

So, why use Locum Caregiver?

Never before have I conducted such thorough upfront research for a design project, but found it incredibly valuable throughout the creative process. Using the UX process from empathize to creating prototypes, I found it beneficial to create a more user-centered product.

In the future, I hope to recruit a few participants to do usability testing. I believe I've created an app that would suit the needs of a stressed-out senior homes staff. Here are the benefits of using this app from different users:

Caregivers: opportunity to earn extra income and gain work experience

Senior Homes staff: reduce the hassle of hiring full-time staff, reduce staff shortage issues

Medical-related students: gain real-world experience in healthcare industry

Community: through volunteering to help with basic tasks and interacting with seniors, you can put a smile on their face

"About 58% of the nation's 14,000 nursing homes are limiting admissions due to shortage of staff."

Problem statement

This app focuses on helping senior home centers to reduce the problem of staff shortage. Since COVID-19, many staff left their senior home centers due to stress and spending most of their time at work. As a result, the remaining staff had to work overtime by taking extra shirts and filling out empty shifts.

i) Senior homes can post temporary jobs with time and date on the job board.

ii) A tracking time function to allow caregivers to record work hours.

iii) Caregivers can generate invoice payment automatically based on their work hours and email it to nursing home staff.

iv) Volunteers from school or community can volunteer to help out task that does not require medical knowledge.

Logo design

To start, I first develop the logo for my app to set the tone, mood, and overall look of my app. The name of the app is Locum Caregiver. Below are a few sketches of logos I've brainstormed:

Then, I transformed the sketches to Adobe Illustrator.

I presented these logo to 4 people and asked them which logo stood out to me. 3 people voted the bottom right, and 1 person voted the bottom left. Hence, the primary logo was decided based on the majority of votes.

Persona

In order to better understand my target user, I developed a persona shown below:

Frame 7.jpg

Low fidelity

Based on the information architecture, I created a low fidelity of my screens.

High fidelity

The sketches are then transformed to high fidelity using Figma.

Thank you for taking the time to read my case study.
